Highlights of the Week

I feel that we are now "officially back" from our travels. The jet lag was pretty brutal in the first couple of days for everyone, but eventually Smarty reverted to her usual mode of sleeping from 10 pm to 9 am and catching up with sleep lost on the road. It was not a moment too soon, because her school starts next week, and its start time is at 8:15 am. The good part is that it's only 15 min drive from our house, so her schedule will be similar to the last year with wake up times at 7:30 am. She is happy about Wednesday - it's a "short day", but it's shortened in the morning and not in the afternoon - school starts at 9 am instead of 8:15 am. Smarty had her orientation on Friday and is absolutely thrilled with her new school. She can't wait to start on Monday.

"Take Your Daughter to Work" Day

On Wednesday, I took Smarty to work, because she did not feel like staying home on her own, and I only needed to be in the office for a few hours. She met some of my coworkers, enjoyed sushi lunch in our cafeteria, and I showed her a bit of our campus. She said that she sees now why I am so happy about my job. While I was in my meetings, she raced through Algebra 1 test I gave her to see if she still remembers anything and spent the rest of the time reading. Apparently, she remembers everything just fine - she only made one error in my test and got 100% on Algebra 1 test that she had during orientation, easily placing into Algebra 2. It's such a relief and such a difference that we did not have to ask for a higher math class, she was simply placed into it.

Spending Time with Friends

Once Smarty got over her jet lag, she started spending hours every day with her best friend - either at his hours or ours. One day they baked delicious cinnamon rolls, but mostly they spent time playing Minecraft. It's quite entertaining to listen to their exchanges when they are engrossed in the game. Smarty is sad that her friend is not joining her in her new school, but it might still happen in 2 years when he enters high school (he has not skipped, so now she is a year ahead of him in school despite being almost a full year younger). I hope they stay connected anyway through their playdates.

What We Are Reading

Strangely, Smarty did not fall back into her "reading mode" yet - probably because she missed her house, her Minecraft, and her friend. She also was tired in the evening, so she did not stay up to read. She was just re-reading her favorite books on her Kindle. I have finally finished An Echo of Things to Come (it took me a cruise week and a week home). It was still a good book, but it felt more like a connector between Book 1 and the future Book 3 rather than an independent book. Now we have to wait half a year for Book 3 in this trilogy.

How was your week?

Our first week back in school went fine. We're still working at getting into a good routine!

I hope Smarty loves her new school.

I'm gonna go check out the book you mentioned.
Our daughters are so different when it comes to math, which amuses me.
