Today, I am grateful for my parents. I am grateful for my childhood when I did not have to worry about food, shelter, or attention. As an only child, I was always the center of that attention, the same position Smarty is enjoying now. My parents celebrated 50 years of marriage last year (I came on the scene exactly 10 months after they tied the knot), and I always knew that I want the same kind of equal partnership in marriage that they had.
I am grateful that my parents adore Smarty, and she loves them back. She is always delighted to see them and she enjoys being spoiled rotten with attention, presents, and helpful advice. I was also lucky to grow up with grandparents, and it's fun to watch Smarty connecting to her grandparents in a different way she connects to us. It's also nice that Smarty is willing to stay at her grandparents' place on her own - something that I was less than thrilled about when I was her age.
I am grateful that I could spend my 50th birthday with my parents, people who gave me life. Unfortunately, I was sick with a nasty cold for most of their visit, but it was nice to feel like a child again talking and laughing with my parents. To my parents, I am still a little girl, even at 50, and for that I am grateful.
