School is Out!

It's official! The school year is over. It's bittersweet to leave Smarty's school for good, but she is looking forward to summer camps, summer travel, and then to her new school. She had a great year, but she does look forward to an environment that will hopefully offer more challenge. She got email addresses and phones of her best friends, so hopefully she will stay in touch with them.

Smarty is a CDB Scholarship Finalist

This year, Smarty applied for the only merit-based high-school scholarship existing in the United States - Caroline D. Bradley scholarship. On Tuesday, she got a word that she was selected as one of the finalists! She will have an interview in San Francisco in late June, and we will know the results in the end of August. Winning this scholarship would be awesome, but even just being selected was very validating for her - a proof that her gifts are indeed rare and can be recognized by others. She is super happy and is looking forward (somewhat apprehensively) to an interview.

The First Travel of Summer

The very next day after school ended, Smarty and I jumped on the plane and flew to New Jersey to surprise my Mom and attend her birthday party. Smarty does not enjoy flying, but she is a good sport as long as she has enough books to read and takes a motion sickness pill prior to the flight. Babushka was speechless when she saw us - my father managed to keep our arrival an absolute secret. It was a very short visit, and tomorrow we are already flying back, but we will see my parents again on our European cruise later this summer.

What My Child Is Reading

Disclosure: I am an Amazon affiliate, and this post contains Amazon affiliate links.
Smarty is devouring books with ridiculous speed - she can read about 400 pages in about 2 hours. She likes to "swallow a book" first, then come back and "savor" it by rereading her favorite parts. These are some the books that she read on the way to New Jersey and in New Jersey.

Congratulations to Smarty - what an honor!

That's a great surprise for your mom.

It sounds like Smarty reads books the same way Emma does. I can't believe how quickly she works through a book.

Congrats on being a finalist!
I haven't read the Divergent series, by the time I was aware of it I was kind of done with post-apocalyptic seeming books.
