The whole month flew by! Here are the latest news from Planet Smarty Pants :)

Good Weather Has Arrived!

We all enjoyed warmer weather this week. It felt great to shed layers of clothes and get back into T-shirts and shorts. Smarty and her Papa made lemonade with lemons from our own lemon tree, we spent more time outside and opened our barbecue season. Current weather forecast promises rain by the end of the next week, but for now we will enjoy warmth while it lasts.

The Book Fair at School

When the Book Fair time arrives, Smarty's allowance and savings rapidly disappear. This time she bought herself a fancy Klutz planner, a Minecraft book, and Greetings from Witness Protection by Jake Burt. She thoroughly enjoyed this book - I am still waiting to see what she will do with her planner :)

An Art Elective

Smarty is really enjoying her art elective this term. She was telling me that she is very happy with how her electives worked out - she had her least favorite one (music) in the first term and "got it over with". The reason why she did not like this elective is that, for once, she was not interested in it at all, but it was part of her STEAM elective track, and it was an exact repetition of what they already learned last year in ukulele. Her second elective was environmental advocacy, which she enjoyed but found quite intense. Now she is happy to have a "relaxing" elective exploring different art techniques - grading seems to be quite generous, and she likes this break in the middle of her day.

Happy Days

Smarty's mood seems to be rising and falling with weather patterns. She was very happy and bubbly most of this week - looking forward to various events in school and enjoying her days. Her general mood is usually positive, and I keep hoping that she will retain this joyous attitude to life even after switching schools. She is really looking forward to her new school - I expected a bit more resistance since she does not hate school like some of her classmates. However, she is really hoping that her new school will give her more challenge and more opportunities, and we keep our fingers crossed that she will be correct.

NOVA

We have a tradition of watching something as a family between 8 and 9 pm. After all recorded seasons of So You Think You Can Dance and many seasons of The Amazing Race, Smarty suddenly requested NOVA. We have Prime, and there are some Prime episodes of NOVA there, plus we also recorded some over years. I like a nightly ritual of choosing an episode to watch. Smarty has little interest in history/archaeology topics but she is really interested in anything that has to do with mathematics, human behavior, robots, and medicine. Today we watched a fascinating episode on fractal geometry, and I realized how much math I haven't learned in all my years of math classes in college. It's awesome to discover new things together.

Your Turn

How was your week?

I do admire California weather! I love the photos of Smarty. It is nice that she is so happy and that she likes art. Happy Easter.

Smarty should come to one of Mike's lab meetings sometime - they are all about robotics and mathematics. Let me know if she's interested, maybe over the summer since they are now earlier Friday afternoons than they used to be.

I hope Smarty really enjoys her new school, and that she makes the most of the rest of this school year. I'm a huge fan of a lower stress class in the middle of the day.

I'm the same way, my mood changes with the weather. If it's sunny and warm I'm immediately in a better mood. That is why Jeff's occasional suggestions of moving somewhere cold immediately have me saying no.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how Smarty likes her new school next year.
