What have we been up to this week? There are a few things to be grateful for :)

1. A Long Weekend

My second week of a new job was a short week, since we were closed for Martin Luther King Jr Day. My husband was working, but Smarty and I spent some quality time together baking, playing, and going to her favorite Yogurt Land store.

2. A Happy Child

Last week, Smarty was struggling a little with changes in her routine and having to spend more time on her own. However, this week she was back to her cheerful self. She is starting to enjoy the freedom of deciding what to do with her time and an opportunity to connect online with other kids from her school who are all playing in the same online Minecraft world hosted by her best friend. They now use hangouts to talk to each other during their online playdates. I want to think that eventually this "fad" will lose its luster, but... Smarty manages to do all her homework in school and easily maintains all As, plus she keeps up with her family duties, so I see no real reason to limit her involvement. She usually plays for about 2 hours directly after school to "unwind" and then gets on with the rest of her life.

3. Spending Time Outside

We enjoy this time of the year when the weather is a bit unpredictable, but rains bring green grass and make everything brighter. We make a point to spend some time outside whenever we can to catch some sun and enjoy our California winter flowers.

4. House Painting

Our house got a new coat of paint! We chose to stick with the same colors, but our current paint was peeling in places, and we wanted to physically protect our "investment". I am grateful that the painters did their job quickly and with good quality. I am also grateful that with me going back to work full time we did not have to worry whether we needed to wait with this project or use the opportunity to do it now.

5. Working for the Company that Values Its Employees

I really like the atmosphere in my new office. The campus is very green and designed for outdoor collaboration and walking. The company cares about sustainability, and this focus is reflected in office design. I love the fact that break rooms are stocked with free food and drinks. Of course, this abundance tests my goal of maintaining my weight, but there are a lot of healthy options for afternoon slumps and mid morning cravings - my favorite low sodium V8 juice is one of them, plus fresh fruits, dry fruits, individually wrapped cheeses, etc. It's nice to be again in an environment when one can really see the investment that the company makes into its people and the office culture.

I'm so glad you are enjoying your new job! That is wonderful news.

Emma loves to have google hangouts with her friends. So far none of my children have gotten into minecraft.

The fact that the hangout is Minecraft might change, but her love for hangouts probably won't. My older still like them. It is part of the social scene now.
