Highlights of the Week

This year I want to change the format of this weekly post and focus on things I am mostly grateful for. So here it goes:

1. My New Job

I started my new job on Monday, and I can already tell that it's going to be an intense but fun environment. I am sharing an office with three other teammates, which has its pluses and minuses. There was not a moment yet when all four of us were in the room together, since everyone spends a fair share of their day in meetings. At least these meetings are face to face, which is a big improvement from my previous job where all of my teams were remote. 
Of course, this first week on the job was like drinking from a fire hose. Unfortunately, the person who was supposed to mentor me is leaving in the end of the next week, so I am trying to get as much information from her as I can. Most of the things are completely new to me - different products, different processes, different tools. But the problems are pretty much the same - accelerating time to market, improving productivity and visibility into project status. I am looking forward to learning more about my own role and how I can contribute my skills to an overall success of my new organization.

2. Rain

We had a completely dry spell over the holidays, and it was nice to see rain returning this week. Yes, it made commute more challenging, but it was so nice to fall asleep to the sound of rain pounding the windows, know that our reservoirs are getting filled again, and to have an excuse to light a fireplace. It was also great to see the sun later in the week and to know that we can enjoy a bright and warm January weekend here in San Francisco Bay Area.

3. My Husband

My husband does not want to appear on my blog, so no picture :) But I am very grateful for him and everything he does for our family. This week he made an effort to come home earlier to let Smarty ease into staying home on her own, took her to her taekwondo practices, and cooked dinner on most nights. We need to get better with meal planning, since we both now work out of office three days a week. I am sure we will figure out our new routine as time goes on.

4. Creative Writing Contests

A few months ago Smarty decided that she wanted to participate in some sort of a writing contest. She did some research and submitted her poem to Poetic Power contest. She got a notice this week that her poem was selected for publication in the spring book. She is very excited to be a "published writer", and she is still hoping to be one of the top 10 winners that will be announced in March. 

5. Audio Books

No, I don't enjoy 1 hour commute in the evening (I am still experimenting with the best times to leave work to see if I can reduce this to 40 minutes it takes me to get to work in the morning), but at least I get to listen to audio books on the way. I am currently listening to 59 Seconds by Richard Wiseman which is a great summary of psychology studies on various topics including the ones on the science of happiness (get a gratitude journal ;)), motivation, creativity, etc. I highly recommend this book - it's both entertaining and, at times, offers easy to implement ideas that could make quite a difference in work and life situations.
