Highlights of the Week

Today we are embarking on our last adventure of this summer - a visit to my parents. Smarty is really looking forward to two weeks of being very spoiled by her loving Babushka and Dedushka. It's hard to believe that school will start back just three days after she comes back from this trip.

Steve and Kate Camp

Smarty really enjoyed her second year in Steve & Kate camp this week. She loves the fact that this camp allows her to freely choose her activities for most of the day. Her favorite thing there is a baking station, and she was supplying us with yummy cinnamon rolls and garlic breads all week long. We also all appreciated flexible drop off and pick up times and not having to drive on congested highways to be somewhere at 8:30 am sharp. Instead, both Smarty and her Dad slept in until about 8:15 am and then she got to the camp by 9, since it's only 15 minutes by car from our home. Too bad that she is going to "age out" of  this camp by the next summer.

What My Child Is Reading

Disclosure: I am an Amazon affiliate, and this post contains Amazon affiliate links.
I really enjoyed books by Arthur C. Clarke while growing up (I read some of them in translation into my native Russian and some in English), and I am glad that Smarty also enjoys his books. We picked up several of them during Kindle sale in July. Last week she read his collection of short stories History Lesson, and this week she raced through Rendezvous with Rama. I am still on the fence whether I will let her read an entire Rama series, since the books get rather dark and more adult in book 3 and beyond. But reading science fiction encouraged her to start her own sci-fi short story. I hope she continues with it, because the beginning looks quite promising.

Favorite Memory of the Week

Smarty (freshly out of a tooth in this picture), watching the first season of Bob Ross' Joy of Painting on YouTube, "This video has such a poor quality. It must be early days of YouTube." The season was filmed in 1983 :)

Oh, yeah, I get a lot of comments like that from my kids about the lack of or lack of quality of technology in the 80's and 90's. They love to hear about the dinosaur age of when I was in high school with no computer, cell phone or VCR!

Enjoy your trip! Johnny is starting school an entire week late this year because I am taking him to my grandmother's 90th birthday party. Thankfully the school was nice about it, and I hope he gets a good start on fourth grade in spite of the late entry.

Ha ha ha ha, great comment from her on the video.
Enjoy your trip.

I just realized the tooth fairy forgot to visit (again) at our house last night.
