Highlights of the Week

We came back from Germany last Saturday afternoon and enjoy being back home. Our Germany trip was a lot of fun, and you can read about it here, but there is something to be said about sleeping in your own bed and having your own space :) We have now recovered from jet lag and settling back into a routine. My husband and I went back to fighting fires at work, and Smarty is going to a summer camp that is pretty much on school schedule - she needs to get up at 7:30 for it, and we pick her up at 4:00 pm in the afternoon.

College 4 Kids

This year, Smarty is trying out a camp on a college campus. Our local community college hosts College 4 Kids program -a 3 weeks camp where students going to grades from 6 to 9 get to take 3 classes a day of their own choosing. Smarty chose drawing, drama, and debate as her subjects. She is enjoying her first week of the camp despite her jet lag, and I plan to write more about it closer to the end of her time there. She is also taking a 4th period of sports and swimming, where they actually teach kids to improve their speed or swimming technique. We did not sign her up this year for our community pool swim lessons, so this is surely handy.

What My Child Is Reading

Smarty read voraciously in Germany. The Overdrive system that lends electronic books is a godsend for us when we travel. She easily read at least 100 hours this summer. Here are some of her favorite books so far.

Favorite Memory of the Week

Smarty was enchanted with this cute egg holder when she saw it in store in Germany. She bought it with her own money, and we secretly bought a matching set of salt/pepper shakers to go with it. She could not wait to try it out at home and made a resolution to make herself a boiled egg as a snack several times a week.

That is a cute set! That college program sounds excellent.

As much as I love traveling, it is always nice to be back home.

Boiled eggs never really caught on with my kiddos, instead they really like scrambled eggs, but that set is super cute.

We just got back from the Navajo Reservation and I am tired. This is the end of a marathon of four busy weeks, and I'm glad they're done.
