Highlights of the Week

It's official - we have a 7th grader! All grades are received, cards delivered, yearbook signed, and kids said Goodbye to school for glorious 10 weeks of summer. Unfortunately, the weather was gloomy for the last few days of "fun schooling", but the much anticipated middle school pool party still took place. Smarty is both sad and excited to see this year end. Right now she is not really ready to think of fall, but she is looking forward to a week of "doing nothing" and then to our trip to Germany.

School

On Tuesday, Smarty's school had the last big event of the year - a STEAM night. It was amazing to see so many kids choosing to participate (it was optional for all grades except 5th grade). There were about 120 projects representing every letter in the word STEAM. Smarty partnered with our neighbor to present her motorized marshmallow roaster. Their booth was a big hit, especially because of free samples.

After School

Smarty spent time after school designing Thank You cards on the computer for her teachers. She also wrote lovely personal messages for them. We did not push her to follow the plan this last week of the school year and she was mostly reading and watching Ted Ed videos in the afternoons.

What My Child Is Reading

Smarty loved My Diary from the Edge of the World by Jodi Lynn Anderson and even convinced me to read it as well. I did and enjoyed it very much. While set in a fantasy world, this is a poignant coming of age story that did not devolve into a and now magic happens because it's a children's book, and we need a happy end story line. Smarty was a bit surprised that I guessed a plot twist about a third into the book, which led to good discussions about critical reading and looking for clues to the ending in the text.

Favorite Memory This Week

We went to a birthday party last Sunday for a son of our friends who turned 6. A party activity was making balloon monsters. Smarty worked hard on hers, I think her Rainbow Monster looks lovely, and he is still with us :)
