Highlights of the Week
Smarty's school had a special recognition ceremony for AMC8 winners this week. Smarty got second place in her school with impressive 18 points out of 25. Her score also earned her the second award of being on an honor roll for AMC8 as a student who scored in top 5% out of more than a hundred thousand middle schoolers taking AMC8 this year. We are very proud of her :)
In other positive news, the work started on our new deck. Right now our backyard looks like a nice mud bath because of dug out soil and all the rain that we are getting - more than 6 inches since January 1st!
We are off to another contest with our Math Team, this time it's a school round of MATHCOUNTS competition. The top 10 kids will head out to a regional competition in February, and Smarty will be one of them. She will also participate in a team round of regionals with other 3 top mathletes from our school. She is working hard on all her subjects and dealing with increased amount of homework in social studies where suddenly homework jumped from nothing to something every day culminating in 18 pages of interactive notebook that for some reason all needed to be done on the same day. At least she is not whining about her homework, but this does cut into our available after school time.
Smarty is a busy bee during a school week with her homework, taekwondo classes twice a week, additional math classes (Art of Problem Solving and a math club) twice a week (both also have homework to add to her load), a choir class, serving as a reading tutor for our neighbor twice a week... We make sure that our weekends stay reasonably free, even though occasionally she also goes to a Sunday taekwondo class that tends to be a lot less crowded. Last weekend, we made a point to relax, enjoy rain, watch The Amazing Race and play some games together. Smarty also put together one of LEGO sets that she got for Christmas to add to her LEGO Friends Amusement Park series.
What My Child Is Reading
Disclosure: I am an Amazon affiliate, and this post contains Amazon affiliate links. We did not make it to the library this week, and Smarty was on a non-fiction kick reading through Imponderables by David Feldman and The De-Textbook (by the way, The De-Textbook has a lot of curse words, we talked about that, but it might be a reason to avoid it for younger kids).
Best Memory of the Week
All happy and relaxed after a week of hard work and enjoying a treat at Yogurt Land.
