Highlights of the Week

Last Sunday, we said, Goodbye! to my parents as they flew back home to New Jersey, and Smarty headed back to school on Monday. I realized that I made fewer pictures than usual this week, since we were both feeling a little under the weather with a sore throat. I am hoping that Smarty does not get sick, since she has a boat load of projects all coming due in the next two weeks, and, as far as I can tell, her groups are going to be struggling mightily to actually have them completed. We are trying to relax and enjoy Advent, but, honestly, we are really looking to the last week before Christmas when we are all going to be off work and school and can enjoy the season more.

Smarty struggled a little in the first couple of days of school to shift from 10 days of an unstructured break to demands of the sixth grade. In her school, there is very little homework, but there is an expectation of research and progress towards the projects. Right now she has two projects going on - one in social studies for Ancient Egypt theme and another one on collaboration in Leadership and Drama. Both of them are group projects and this makes things more complicated. For example, in collaboration project, she and her partner had an idea of what they wanted to do, but they needed to get together after school to actually do it, and they could never find a good time. Now, the project is due on Monday, and the girls are getting together on Sunday to do a "hands-on" portion of it. As I said, I don't see it ending with a good grade unless they change their tack and explain instead how collaboration can fail ;)

After School

Smarty is pretty happy with the switch to taekwondo and already registered for belt promotional testing in the end of December hoping to get her next level belt. She is practicing at home a little as well, so she seems serious about it. She also found time to make her Papa an Advent calendar pictured above - her German uncle and aunt secretly gave her in Florida a paper kit that required folding all components, and she was working on it every evening while Papa was not home.

What My Child Is Reading

Disclosure: I am an Amazon affiliate, and this post contains Amazon affiliate links. This week, Smarty "swallowed" The Secret Keepers book by Trenton Lee Stewart, author of The Mysterious Benedict Society. She really enjoyed it and asked me to recommend it to others. The rest of her books were re-reads from her favorite series.

Favorite Memory This Week

Seeing Smarty enjoying her parents - this is the last picture I took of three of them together for this visit. Now we are looking forward to visiting them in summer!
