Highlights of the Week
Smarty struggled a little in the first couple of days of school to shift from 10 days of an unstructured break to demands of the sixth grade. In her school, there is very little homework, but there is an expectation of research and progress towards the projects. Right now she has two projects going on - one in social studies for Ancient Egypt theme and another one on collaboration in Leadership and Drama. Both of them are group projects and this makes things more complicated. For example, in collaboration project, she and her partner had an idea of what they wanted to do, but they needed to get together after school to actually do it, and they could never find a good time. Now, the project is due on Monday, and the girls are getting together on Sunday to do a "hands-on" portion of it. As I said, I don't see it ending with a good grade unless they change their tack and explain instead how collaboration can fail ;)
Smarty is pretty happy with the switch to taekwondo and already registered for belt promotional testing in the end of December hoping to get her next level belt. She is practicing at home a little as well, so she seems serious about it. She also found time to make her Papa an Advent calendar pictured above - her German uncle and aunt secretly gave her in Florida a paper kit that required folding all components, and she was working on it every evening while Papa was not home.

Seeing Smarty enjoying her parents - this is the last picture I took of three of them together for this visit. Now we are looking forward to visiting them in summer!
