Highlights of the Week

It's been a busy week. We had our friends coming over last weekend for a belated celebration of Smarty's birthday. On Monday, she was out trick-or-treating for almost two hours and was quite exhausted by the time she came back home. To a degree, she is still recovering from all this excitement while still trying to cope with increased workload in school. It's the end of the trimester, and suddenly all the projects are due, so our procrastinator is struggling to manage her "want to do" against her "need to do" items.

School

Smarty is working hard in school and at home to keep up with her class. While she is doing great on tests, she still struggles with advanced planning for long term projects. As a result, she had to spend many hours at home this week catching up with her writing and social studies projects that were "suddenly" due. She is also learning some interesting practical lessons on collaboration while working on her Collaboration project based unit for her Leadership and Drama class. For example, she and her partner were planning to get together after school to work on their project, but, because of their miscommunication it did not happen yet, which will eventually result in more rush when that project comes due. But I think those are all good lessons to learn, and I am trying to relax about her grades and focus on her learning these critical life skills.

After School

Even though Smarty's afternoons were rather busy this week, we made sure to go for walks and enjoy our beautiful fall weather. Smarty always loves to get "cat therapy" during these wals by petting our neighborhood cats, and sometimes she opens up about different experiences of her school life that never come out during, "How was school?" interrogation session. She also kept all her regular after school activities - teaching our neighbor to read twice a week, her choir and her gymnastics. She is a busy tween, but she is hanging in there so far!

Places We Are Going

Smarty enjoyed a Halloween party at her best friend's place where every kid got to carve their own pumpkin. Being an overachiever, Smarty carved two, plus one at home. We will be sad letting those pumpkins go this weekend - they smell SO nice!

What My Child Is Reading

Disclosure: I am an Amazon affiliate, and this section contains Amazon affiliate links. This week, Smarty read a lot less than usual because of her classwork and other activities occupying most of her time, but she started on Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children that she received for her birthday. She says that the book is good, but I haven't heard details yet.

Best Memory of the Week

Love her Halloween costume! Yes, she does have a busy schedule! She's a lot like momma.

I love Smarty's outfit!

I think middle school is the perfect time to let grades slip while you learn life lessons. Universities only care about high school anyway :)

My kids are having to slowly learn the hard lessons of keeping track of stuff on their own too. It's hard.
