Highlights of the Week

It was a good week! Last Sunday, Smarty celebrated her birthday with her closest friends. The first school trimester is drawing to a close, and it looks like we are going to keep our tradition of taking her a week early before Thanksgiving break, so she can go to Florida for a week with her Dad to meet up with her uncle and aunt. We are finalizing the last details before deciding on the departure date.

On Wednesday, middle schoolers had an "exhibition hour" to showcase their projects from the first cycle of "Innovation Time". Innovation Time is a block of 80 minutes that they get every Wednesday to participate in specific projects of their choice. Smarty's choice for this cycle was Odyssey of the Mind, and their final project was a short skit where they were expected to create a story that would involve animals. Smarty was a tiger in her skit, and here she is making her best ferocious face :) Smarty is enjoying school, but we are still waiting on the solution for math and science. With the current situation with math and science, our STEAM school looks more like TEA school.

After School

In addition to her multiple after school activities, Smarty volunteered to teach our 3 year old neighbor to read. Now twice a week she is heading over and playing games with little K while also showing him letters and sounds with Starfall. K's family is from India, and his Mom invited Smarty to do some rangoli art for Diwali. She has these neat stencils for kids that are "almost" foolproof and produce beautiful designs. Smarty certainly enjoyed trying rangoli out and is hoping that the next time she can try making her art using her hands and not stencils.

Places We Are Going

Smarty finished her Digital Logic class and made a reaction timer that actually works. She also wrapped up her 4-week Beginner Leadership class and now can't wait for Intermediate Leadership course in February.

What My Child Is Reading

Disclosure: I am an Amazon associate, and this post contains Amazon affiliate links. We have finally made it to the library this week. Smarty got about 20 new books to read, but she started with a non-fiction books in her high interest subject. Mission Control, This Is Apollo is obviously about American moon program. While the book is dense with a lot of text, Smarty could not put it down until she read through it at least two times in a row. She also got some books from her favorite series The Ranger's Apprentice to re-read again - I honestly lost count how many times she read these books by now.

Favorite Memory of the Week

It took Smarty only about 2 hours to put together this LEGO Friends amusement park, a birthday present for Opa. For once, she is actually playing with it :)

That is a very cool Lego Friends set.

Do you recommend that new LEGO Friends line? My girls have been eyeing it. I am trying to figure out how serious it is. Earlier LEGO Friends sets have felt dumbed down to me and I don't like that.

I think you will find the Science and Math of STEAM largely missing in most US schools. I am frustrated at the moment because my second grader spends all morning every single morning on literacy. That leaves only two hours after lunch each day for ALL of the other subjects. Not enough time, and certainly not aligned with research on how second graders should be spending their time in school.
