Highlights of the Week

Smarty was literally bouncing off the walls this week in anticipation of her birthday. It fell on Wednesday, so she opened some presents in the morning and went to school, then opened more presents in the afternoon and we took her to her favorite sushi place for dinner. Now we officially have a tween, and I can only hope that she keeps her pleasant and cheerful disposition in her tween years. Now Smarty is eagerly looking forward to her birthday party this weekend with a few of her best friends.

School

So far Smarty is quite happy with school. She enjoys her STEAM class where the middle schoolers are learning to use electric saws and power drills while making wooden dice. Each die is pretty big, and I wonder what Smarty will do with her ever growing dice collection. To her credit, her dice are getting more precise with each attempt. She is also really enjoying writing this year and consistently gets excellent grades in writing. She started to make new friends and now sits at lunch with a group of girls. Hopefully, this good streak will continue into the last month of the first trimester!

After School

We had our first significant rain of the season last weekend, but then sunny weather returned, and we made a point of finding time for an afternoon walk. Smarty is getting surprisingly little homework, so she has time for other things despite her scheduled after school activities. Lately, she was interested in astronomy, so she entertains herself watching astronomy videos on Khan Academy and YouTube.

Places We Are Going

Smarty took another class with Lyceum last weekend. This time the topic was Digital Logic, and her best friend joined the class as well. It's a two part class where the kids are going to build a reaction timer. They are going to finish it this weekend.

What My Child Is Reading?

Disclosure: I am an Amazon affiliate, and this post contains Amazon affiliate links. It's kind of strange but I have no idea what Smarty was reading this week. I think that she was re-reading her favorite parts in The Hunger Games, because she mentioned it to me a couple of times. For her birthday, we gave her a Smithsonian Timelines of History to support her newfound love of social studies. I am looking forward to reading this book myself and find some "supporting books" to read with it.

Favorite Memory of the Week

I'm glad she had a fun birthday! Having friends to sit with at lunch time in school should make a big difference!
