Highlights of the Week

Last Friday night, Smarty and I flew to New Jersey where Smarty will spend two weeks being spoiled rotten by her loving grandparents. This week I was with her, but I was working from my parents' home while Smarty enjoyed going to the pool with grandparents, trying to make friends with their cat, and, of course, reading.

Summer Learning and Fun

My parents live in a town with an amazing library. It has a huge children's section, extended hours, even in summer, and library programs every day with hours that are actually convenient for people who work. Smarty went to two programs this week and I attended with her the one about science of sound. It was led by a violinist that showed kids how various sound effects work in concert settings. Smarty was so interested that she said that she might, after all, take up a string instrument this fall. We shall see.
She also filled up on books and was happy to discover audio versions of her favorite series of Ranger's Apprentice. She was listening to them at grandparent's home while drawing or playing with clay.

What My Child Is Reading

Disclosure: I am an Amazon affiliate, and this section contains Amazon affiliate links. This week, Smarty read a wide variety of books - some that I loaded on Kindle before we left home and some from the local library. She really enjoyed two of them - The Giver by Lois Lowry and No Dream Is Too High by Buzz Aldrin, her personal hero. I also really liked The Giver, and we had interesting discussions about this book. I really hope that she will have it in her middle school as a reading assignment.

Favorite Memory of the Week

My Mom to Smaty: You are a girl, you should take care of your appearance. Every day you should look your best.
Smarty: I like to look my best on special occasions. But on regular day, I prefer to take care of my mind and get dirty.

How fun! I love the quote. That lake looks familiar! I just watched the movie, The Giver, this week and I have been meaning to read No Dream Too High!

This looks like a wonderful trip for Smarty! I'm glad you got to spend some time there (and still get work done), too. I miss the amazing libraries of the East Coast.

Ha ha ha ha, that quote!

I've heard the movie version of the Giver really messed up the book.

The library sounds wonderful. We really miss our old library, it was also fantastic for the children. My A loves the Giver, and the rest of the books in the series too, but it's a controversial book - one I wasn't allowed to use when I was tutoring reading - sad. Great Smarty quote. She's a sharp one!
