Highlights of the Week

We enjoyed a long weekend with having friends over, going to a pirate-themed birthday party for a 5 year old son of our friends, and opening a pool season. The week was tense waiting for the decision on Smarty's enrollment to the 6th grade of our new STEAM school, but by now the wait is over, and Smarty is officially going to be a middle schooler next fall. She is super excited!

It's kind of bittersweet to know that it will be Smarty's last week at her elementary school. She is enjoying all the "funschooling" activities of the last weeks - special art projects, extra time outside, and designing a geometric city during math time. On Friday, 4th grade had an annual picnic in the broiling heat, but having water guns and water balloons helped keep kiddos cool. Smarty will certainly miss her familiar environment, but... she is looking forward to be going to a brand new school that is still in the middle of the construction. In fact, it's kind of hard to envision it being finished in time for the next school year!

After School

We spent several hot late afternoons at our community pool this week. This year, Smarty is old enough to apply for a "yellow card". This means she needed to pass a swim test from a life guard, and now she can stay at the pool without parents for 2 hours. Our pool does have life guards and also a mandatory break for kids every 45 minutes for 15 minutes ("adult swim"). We have not tried leaving Smarty on her own yet, but it is good to be able to do it if she wants to stay longer than we do. She will also have additional swim classes for the first 2 weeks of summer break - mostly to improve her technique and endurance. Smarty loves pool and swimming - the only thing that she hates is the need to wash hair every night to remove chlorine.

What My Child Is Reading

Disclosure: I am an Amazon affiliate, and this section contains Amazon affiliate links. We did not make it to the library this week, so Smarty was mostly re-reading her favorites. However, I "tricked" her into our next "mother-daughter book club" book. My choice was The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, and I challenged her to figure out who narrates the book. She is enjoying the book, and I do too, but I am not as far in it as she is.

Favorite Memory of the Week

Since it's a clean up time in school, Smarty brought home her art portfolio from this year. One of the projects was a self-portrait with a poem typed on transparency over it. I love her poem - it's so... her, well, except loving to wear dresses part.
The good, the great, the A...
Funny, smart, cuddly, cheerful,
Lover of soft things and books.
Who feels calm and cozy,
Who finds happiness in her parents,
Who needs books, family, and friends,
Who fears spiders and the dark,
Who would like to see a beautiful scene
Who enjoys games and cats
Who loves to wear dresses.

I really should do more poetry with my kids. I just..... hate it. Which isn't fair to them, but there it is.

My kids would spend all of their time in the pool too, only they got spoiled when we went swimming during school hours and having an empty pool all to themselves, so they're not as excited by actually having people in the giant neighborhood pools.

Best of luck to Smarty in middle school! Love her poem, it sounds so much like something my D. would write, I get the feeling they would be friends. Oh The Book Thief made me cry, it is on the list for D. to read this summer too.

I hope Smarty loves her new school! That is nice that your pool always has a lifeguard on duty.
