Highlights of the Week

I am "cheating" and writing this post on Wednesday evening, as we are leaving tomorrow for our first trip of this summer, and I want to share our "short" week. We had a relaxed Father's Day with Smarty giving her Papa her presents and then building with LEGOs with him. She enjoyed the second week of swim classes - her instructor graciously made up two days she would miss by doubling the lessons on Tuesday and Wednesday. Smarty is eagerly looking forward to the road trip and then to her favorite summer camp starting next week.

Summer Learning and Fun

Smarty enjoyed a playdate with one of her school friends on Tuesday. Every time when L visits, she brings over her American Girl doll, and the girls are spending hours in pretend play. This visit inspired Smarty to make some American Girl school supplies - more on that in the post next week. She also set up her fertilizer science experiment, played with neighborhood kids, and, of course, read..

What My Child Is Reading

Disclosure: I am an Amazon affiliate, and this section contains Amazon affiliate links. We made it to the library on Monday, and Smarty loaded up on books. Some of them were re-reads of her favorite Ranger Apprentice series, and she also read several non-fiction books on her favorite topic of space exploration. She especially liked The Mighty Mars Rovers book that offers a great overview of Spirit and Opportunity program. For our book club, we read Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper - a brilliantly written book about a 10 year old girl who is struggling to overcome her disability and be accepted as equal in her school. Smarty thought that the ending was sad, but I thought that it was honest and realistic. I am not going to give it away, but instead I would really encourage you to offer this book to your tweens and teens.

Favorite Memory of the Week

Smarty made us a delicious bean dip appetizer. Love her celery presentation too :)

I totally missed when I was originally reading the cooking post the flowers were strawberries and celery stalks. That is quite original.

Princess frequently makes accessories for her American Girl dolls, now she's graduated to sewing for them. It amuses me.

K read Out of My Mind and enjoyed it until she got to the end. Then she declared she HATED it! I think she prefers happy endings. :)
