Highlights of the Week

It was the last week of elementary school for Smarty! We all have mixed feelings of excitement and loss. Her current school was a welcoming home for her and our family for the last 5 years. We made friends with parents and teachers. At the same time we are excited about what 6th grade has in store for Smarty and the opportunities that a project-based learning environment might be able to offer to our curious and enthusiastic learner.

School

Smarty was over the top excited and exhausted this week waiting for Friday and for her class "red carpet award ceremony". She was really hoping for a particular award, and she got exactly what she wanted - she was voted by her classmates as "strong leader". We really hope that she gets to practice her leadership skills next year and be able to influence classmates that will now be 1 to 2 years older than she is. But, in the meantime, we are all happy to kick off 10 weeks of vacation. Next week Smarty will be at home with her Papa taking a swim class and enjoying her freedom.

After School

While we were shopping for the gifts for the last day of school, Smarty used one of her Target gift cards and bought herself a set of LEGO bricks. It's good to see her wanting to play with LEGO again - I am looking forward to more LEGO building this summer.
In less positive news, we received an email saying that Smarty made a district cadet band next year. It's a more advanced level of band than beginner's band she was doing this year. We are very proud of our little trumpet player, but, because she is changing schools and grades, she won't be able to participate. Her new school will have a strings orchestra, but so far Smarty was not interested in playing anything but trumpet. At least she will still have an option of a choir class as an elective class in her new middle school.

Places We Are Going

Last weekend, our local gifted organization, Lyceum, had an annual picnic. Older kids prepared a couple of activities for younger kids. Smarty enjoyed microscopes and volunteered to give her own talk next fall - about Apollo program, a current subject of her intense fascination. She already started to dig out the material for her talk, and wants to develop it fully over summer.

What My Child Is Reading

Disclosure: I am an Amazon affiliate, and this section contains Amazon affiliate links. We didn't make it to the library this week. Both Smarty and I have finished The Book Thief and had a lot of interesting discussions about it. Smarty was also enjoying her Kindle favorites - she is rereading The Martian yet again.

Best Memory of the Week

I cropped this picture for the blog, but Smarty is sitting on the big block of stone with her school name on it - an obligatory last day of school picture. Goodbye, elementary school! Hello, summer!

It's a great picture of her on the sign. I like her being off center (for some reason I really like that in pictures).
