Highlights of the Week

This week started with Smarty complaining of sore throat and having a fever. We held her home from school on Monday to give her a chance to recover, because we didn't want her to miss a trip that she was dreaming about for the past 5 years - an annual field trip for all fourth graders in our school to the Gold Country of California.

Smarty could not think of anything else this week other than the Gold Rush trip. I could not chaperone this trip, but I could follow its progress through Facebook updates of many parent volunteers who joined kiddos in Sonora. As luck would have it, it was an unusually rainy day, but everyone still thoroughly enjoyed it despite the departure time of 5:30 am.

After School

On Sunday, when Smarty was still nursing her cold and feeling miserable, my husband asked her if she would be up for some Wii play. We got out our Wii Balance board and enjoyed some fitness games with Wii Fit. Smarty loved that and asked to play a little every night this week. We don't mind her playing a little video games as long as her screen time is not excessive.

Places We Are Going

Despite her cold. Smarty begged to go to the birthday party for her friend last weekend, and I let her with the knowledge that the kiddos are unlikely to have a birthday party together again next year. It was an outdoor laser tag party, and Smarty had a blast. The temperature that day was in the 90s but very windy. Now, just a few days later, we dropped back into 60s and rain, so the kids got lucky with timing for that party!

What My Child Is Reading

Disclosure: I am an Amazon affiliate, and this section contains Amazon affiliate links. Smarty always reads a lot, and she reads even more when she is under the weather. We read a very good book in our Mother-Daughter Book Club - Friends for Life by Andrew Norriss. It is definitely a book for older kids as it deals with heavy matters of teenage depression and suicide, but it's not "dark" and it led us to good conversations on the matters of mental health. She also read a lot on her own - some of it were comic books, some are rereads.

Favorite Memory of the Week

Me: I wonder if M (her best friend) likes Frozen.
Smarty: Mama, we don't discuss silly things. We talk about important things. For example, if God exists or not.

It sounds like she had a very fun week despite her cold. Quentin wants lazer tag for his birthday party, too. Loved the quote!

I never got to go to the Gold Mines when I lived in California, that would make a super cool field trip. I'm jealous now.

I always love Smarty's quotes! Too bad for her cold, but it sounds like she didn't miss a beat, all the same - what a fun week!
