Highlights of the Week

I felt very loved on Mother's Day last Sunday. We have decided to skip camping due to bad weather and spent a day as a family. Smarty gave me her gifts including a song she composed herself and a poem she wrote in school, and my husband gave me a spa certificate. I consider myself a very lucky Mom - Smarty is such a joyful and loving child, and I feel this especially keenly on Mother's Day.

School

4 more weeks are left in the school year, and we continue to look into how the next year might look like. This week, Smarty and some of her grade mates who are not leaving for new school took a math assessment test for the end of the fifth year with the goal to see if they could be pulled together into a separate accelerated math class. Our principal is certainly interested in doing that, but... so far there is no budget for making it happen. At least I have to give it to our school that they are trying hard to accommodate the needs of not only kids below the grade but also trying to figure out solutions for advanced learners.

After School

Smarty's last after school enrichment program of the year was Star Wars Mania. She enjoyed it, especially the last session where they made light sabers out of pool noodles. She is also preparing for band and choir performance in 2 weeks, which means additional rehearsals. We are looking forward to hear kids show off their musical skills... and we are still waiting for Smarty to play Star Wars theme cleanly on her trumpet :)

What My Child Is Reading

Disclosure: I am an Amazon affiliate, and this section contains Amazon affiliate links. The Martian by Andy Weir was a book for our Mother-Daughter book club this week. Yes, it has some "bad language", but as my daughter pointed out, she would be using these words too if she were stuck alone on Mars. Both of us found The Martian impossible to put down, and I was actually quite impressed how my 9 year old could discuss many of Mark Watney's technical problems with us and how she retained all the details despite the fact that her reading speed about 3 times faster than mine.
