Highlights of the Week
I cannot believe that another month flew by and there are only 6 weeks left in a school year. Smarty says that she does not feel it well but we do. Smarty had her regular orthodontist, and her braces are progressing nicely. In a few more months they will come off, and she will wear a retainer for a couple of years until her permanent teeth all come in. We have finished design work on our front and back yard - the next step is actually get bids and start construction. Hopefully, we will get to it in May.
Now standardized testing is over, and school seems to be more relaxed with fun activities happening every week. This week, kids had a "wild life assembly" where a local rescue organization brought several rescue animals to school including a wild cat and told kids stories about them. Fourth graders are also working in groups learning more about the Gold Rush. They used to have a year-end project related to the Gold Rush, but they went for something completely different this year - they are making their own board games based on their latest read-aloud book - The Tale of Desperaux.
We do not get to do a lot of activities during a school week, because Smarty wants to read or play with kids outside. She does three things every day though - a little bit of Khan Academy math, a DuoLingo German lesson, and trumpet practice. Last weekend, her father called an "art day", and we all enjoyed making some new decorations for our house. I might share some of them later on the blog.
Places We Are Going
Last weekend, we attended a math seminar organized by Lyceum, our local organization for parents of gifted children. Smarty described the experience as much better than she expected. The topic was numbers and patterns, and the instructor was really good. It's too bad that she cannot attend the next 2 classes, because we have other commitments for these next two weekends. Hopefully, this series will be repeated next year.
What My Child Is Reading
Disclosure: I am an Amazon affiliate, and this section contains Amazon affiliate links. Smarty has finished Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull, and we both read a book of her choice for Mother-Daughter book club - Flyaway by Lucy Christopher. We both enjoyed the story even though I'd say that it is probably a better fit in terms of content for kids over 10. She also read a sci-fi mystery Spaced Out by Stuart Gibbs.
Favorite Memory of the Week
After watching Star Wars: Force Awakens, Smarty said, I wonder where they are going with this. I am hoping that the next episode will not have yet another planet-destroying device that needs to be blown up!
