Highlights of the Week
It was the first week back from Presidents' Day break, and it went better than I expected. Smarty was getting up easily and was pretty organized in the morning - packing her backpack and lunch without any intervention on our part. Well, she forgot her lunch one day, but her school lets kids borrow money for a cafeteria lunch when that happens. We finally booked tickets for her and Papa to go to Germany, and finalized our summer plans. Hopefully, we will book all our summer travel this weekend.
Smarty's fourth grade had a special day this week - a field trip to one of California missions. Smarty was eagerly looking forward to it and enjoyed it. When I asked her what her favorite part was, she said, Shopping! and added, Well, I know you want the truth. But then she explained some details about the mission, its owners, and Ohlone Indians. She brought a cute souvenir of a stone ginger cat - she is a cat girl through and through!
After school life went on as usual this week. Smarty has finished her Islamic art project, continued her uninterrupted streak on Khan Academy, and played outside with other kids from our street. One night, when I had an event at work, she and Papa went to their favorite father-daughter date night place - IKEA. Smarty really likes Swedish meatballs in IKEA restaurant :)
What My Child Is Reading
Disclosure: I am an Amazon associate, and this section contains Amazon affiliate links. As always, Smarty was reading a lot this week. This week, it was a combination of reading again her favorites (two books in Ender series by Otton Scott Card) and two new books that she said were very good. She especially liked How Not to Run for President. Can't you tell that we are all following the circus of presidential nominations?
Places We Are Going
Last weekend we went for our second National Park trip this year. This time we visited Yosemite. We had good luck with the weather even though Smarty was disappointed with a very patchy snow cover. We stayed at Yosemite Lodge and hiked to Yosemite Falls and to Mirror Lake (that's the first picture in this post). We were blown away with how crowded Yosemite Park was, but we did not know that this was a special week when photographers from all over the world flock to Yosemite to try and shoot Yosemite Firefall. We did not see this event while we were there, because there were no place to park whatsoever near El Capitan. It was completely crazy. The pictures of this firefall surely look fantastic :)
Favorite Memory of the Week
Smarty feels particularly loving towards her Dad lately. They always had close relationship, and she enjoyed having special time with him during her break week. A couple of weeks ago she was at the birthday party at a place where kids can decorate pottery and then get their pottery glazed in the kiln. She made a special mug for her Dad and spent a lot of time decorating a wrapping paper for it. Papa was very pleased :)
