Highlights of the Week
Our first week of the year was very wet! We cannot complain - California desperately needs water, but our kids are not used to being cooped inside so much. Dark and rainy skies made early mornings even more difficult - on vacations Smarty went to bed late and slept in until 10 am or so, but we all pulled through. Sadly, I have nothing much to report on job search, but I am hoping to find something with more purpose by the end of 2016, this is one of my main goals for this year. We also made some goals specific for this month, and we already checked off one - it was an obvious task of clearing off Christmas stuff and redecorating for winter.
Smarty did not say much about school this week. She seems overall happy there and excited about an integrated project in language art where they are making an object to represent their latest book club book. She is designing a cereal box, but the project is all done in school, so I have no idea how the final result will look like. In math, she is given a free reign on Khan Academy and mostly uses math time in class to teach herself programming. I do insist that she at least takes mastery challenges every day and progresses towards an official completion of fourth grade curriculum. Her teacher does not want to let her move to higher grade math missions until fourth grade mission is completed. It's close - about 80% done.
Smarty has four after school activities this winter: band, chess, choir, and gymnastics. Chess and choir are on the same day, because Wednesday is a short day in school. The other two days are kept for unstructured time. We are also trying to have a game night after dinner on Tuesdays with the thought that we can leverage other days of the week if Tuesday falls through. This Tuesday nobody was up for a long game, so we played a fun card game called Fluxx. We also completed our first "cook around the world" country - Ethiopia and moved on to Colombia.
What My Child Is Reading
Smarty is on re-reading spree again enjoying her favorite Rick Riordan books, Boxcar Children series on Kindle and several 39 Clues books from our home library . She also enjoyed a sci-fi story Pi in the Sky by Wendy Mass.
Favorite Memory of the Week
Smarty to me just before saying good night, "I love my life. I am so lucky. I wouldn't change anything in my life, I love it just the way it is."
