Highlights of the Week

We all enjoyed a Thanksgiving break (a 4 day holiday for me and my husband) and a visit from my parents. My Mom is always in charge of a turkey and she has a yearly ritual of worrying about her turkey until it emerges from the oven smelling and tasting absolutely delicious. Smarty enjoyed her time with grandparents, but was happy to have a couple of playdates with her best friend as well. We did not go to the stores on Black Friday preferring to do all our shopping online. I think we are almost done with our Christmas presents – record achievement for us!

Thanksgiving Break

It was a school break week for Smarty, and she enjoyed unstructured time with her grandparents. They went for walks, played chess, and my Mom attempted to teach Smarty to knit. It didn’t go too well, since Smarty wanted to do everything herself and struggled to follow instructions. I am thinking that perhaps she should learn eventually through YouTube videos. On Friday, Smarty floated back to her laptop, did a few challenges in math portions of Khan Academy and started to learn programming again with Khan Academy videos. I think her best friend’s passionate interest in all things computer is kind of rubbing off on her.

Places We Are Going

Last weekend, Smarty and I went to a “science camp” at Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley. This camp was organized by Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth, and Smarty loved every minute of it. I described part of what we did there in Experiments with Dry Ice. Stay tuned for more stories from that science camp on the blog. We also went hiking with my grandparents and visited our best friends in their new home that they had moved to just before Thanksgiving.

What My Child Is Reading

Smarty raced through Artemis Fowl series super fast, and now she is going back and rereading her favorite scenes – she does it quite often with her favorite books… She is also rereading a bunch of other books from our home library.

Favorite Memory of the Week

I love that Smarty and her Grandfather found things to do together :)

Very nice pics of Smarty with her grandparents :) I love your mother's ritual of fretting over the turkey - good memories to hold onto.

That turkey looks amazing! I am with you on online shopping - preferably before Black Friday, although I did buy one gift for my sister on Friday - online.

I've still got more shopping to do than I'd like, but for the most part am done with shopping in the stores.
