Highlights of the Week

This week Smarty is enjoying Florida! She and her Papa go there every fall to meet up with her German uncle and aunt. I try to convince my brother-in-law to come to California instead, but they have visited us before and prefer to spend their vacation time lying around the pool in warm weather.  Well, Northern California late fall is not as warm, but it’s gorgeous. The weather is cool, the sun is blue, and the trees are beautiful in their festive fall colors. I spent the week catching up with work, but I also made a point to go for a walk every day and enjoy the view.

Places We Are Going

My brother and sister in-law always go to the same place – St. Petersburg near Tampa. Smarty’s favorite part of Florida week is a 2-day pass to Busch Gardens. She is not a big fan of rides, but she enjoys seeing shows and observing animals. Last year, she got to pet a kangaroo, but she was very disappointed this year, because it was too hot and kangaroos were not interested in interacting with humans. She also visited an art museum and a circus museum.

What My Child Is Reading

Artemis Fowl
Disclosure: Amazon affiliate links in this section. We saved Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer for the trip to Florida to make sure that Smarty has something “meaty” to sink her mind to while on vacation. She is hooked and is already polishing off book #3 in the series. I should be used to it by now, but it always amazes me how fast she reads and how much she retains from what she reads.

Favorite Memory of the Week

Every night Smarty and I talked on Skype and she was telling me stories of her travels and discussed progress of her math independent study work which was a set of MOEMS problems. And she always wanted me to sing her our traditional Russian lullaby about in the middle of our conversation. Then she would jump up and talk some more. Skype is definitely a way to keep close even over distance.

And for ADD people like me, Skype helps me to concentrate on what I'm talking to the person about. I just don't concentrate as well if I don't have a visual to look at.
