Are you getting ready for Advent? Today I am sharing our plan for Advent 2015.

Counting Down to Christmas

We are not religious, but Christmas is a major holiday in our countries of birth, and both my husband and I love Christmas season and all the anticipation that is inherent in counting down days to Christmas Eve. In years passed I tried to surprise Smarty with December activities and books. When she was young, I pre-selected December crafts, we put activities cards into our felt chocolate advent calendar and followed online Advent calendars. Last year we did a book advent when I wrapped our Christmas books (yes, we have 24 Christmas books!), and we opened a new book every night. However, the challenge with all these calendars was that sometimes activities did not fit into a busy December schedule and sometimes Smarty simply did not want to do something that did not appeal to her.

Child Led Advent Calendar

This time I involved Smarty in making Advent activities list. We cheated a little and looked at some great lists available from my blog friends:
Smarty picked activities from different calendars that appealed to her and added a few of her own. You might be surprised to see that her list does not include reading Christmas books. Reading is such “business as usual” to her that she takes this part of Christmas time for granted. We are certainly going to get out all our Christmas books out of storage tonight!
I want to provide a few useful links to go with our plan:

Kids always know best. There are some awesome Advent activities here. My favorite is the Holiday lights scavenger hunt!

I gave up years ago on coming up with a list of activities, we NEVER do them. Though, this year Princess got a LEGO Advent calendar, and wants to put it together slowly. We'll see if that happens.

I love her list, but now I have the Mary Poppins' "Feed the Birds" song stuck in my head!
