Highlights of the Week

  • We had a great and relaxing Memorial Day weekend
  • We have made an appointment to start getting daughter wired for braces. We are very nervous, but so far she has been quite excited about that.
  • I have reached my goal for May to exercise more and got my weight exactly where I wanted it to be – 125 lbs

The end of school is in the air, but there are still 2 weeks to go. Sadly, Smarty is not enjoying these last few weeks because of the teachers’ change in her classroom. She actually likes a substitute now, but the class environment became noisier and more chaotic than she can tolerate. We all can’t wait for June 11 when our school year ends. In the meantime, we are attending end of the year events. This week Smarty’s school district had a festival where two district choirs and two bands showed off their work this year. Smarty is in Junior Choir this year, and she is looking forward to going to a Senior Choir (for grades 4 and 5) next year. The kids actually sounded rather good, and I am glad that Smarty has an opportunity to try something that does not come naturally to her.

After School

We were happy that our weather improved enough for the Memorial Day weekend for us to be able to enjoy our community pool opening up for this summer season. We went twice during a long weekend, but we didn’t make it to the pool during this school week. However, we went to play tennis several times, made a water filter and played “roll-a-castle”. In addition, I registered Smarty for free Tenmarks summer math program. The idea of the program is that students get to first pass the year end test for the grade they were in. Then they either practice skills they didn’t quite master during the year or work ahead. I cheated a little on registration and put Smarty in as going to the 5th grade. She easily passed year-end assessment test for 4th grade and missed just one question. She liked the format and was busy this week completing the assignments for the fifth grade and enjoying it.

What My Child Is Reading

This section contains Amazon affiliate links, for full disclosure click here. Actually, this week Smarty read somewhat less than usual because of all the other things occupying her time. But on Thursday we finally made it to the library, so she is back in “read all day” mode and the piles of “read” books and magazines is growing every hour. There are a couple of books that I would recommend from her stack: Get to Work, Hercules from Myth-O-Mania series, Confessions of a Former Bully, and What to Do When You Grumble Too Much: A Kid’s Guide to Overcoming Negativity. By the way, I didn’t “slip” this last book to her – she chose it herself from the library shelf.

Favorite Memory of the Week

Smarty to me: We have a talent show tryouts on Friday, and I really wish I had any talent to show off at a talent show. Why don't I have any talents?
Me: But you do have talents!
Smarty: Yes, I have gifts, but they are all in my head. I wish I had something more... visible.

Too bad she is not enjoying her last couple weeks of school but at least it is not too long. Lucky that your pools are open. Ours isn't until June.

Congrats on reaching your goal! I'm not making as much progress on that front as I'd like....

I want to go swimming, maybe tomorrow, I think, fingers crossed, it's not raining tomorrow.
