Highlights of the Week

  • Our second week of Christmas break was just as pleasant as the first week – we all spent a lot of time building with Legos, reading, and playing.
  • We went on a day trip to the snow to Bear Valley.
  • We made New Year resolutions.
  • We spent a lot of time with friends this week. One of the meetings was with a friend visiting from Washington State. We met in online group for young mothers when Smarty was a baby. I wish they were closer to us, since Smarty and her two kids (age 8 and 6) clicked marvelously and spent the whole evening engrossed in play.

A Snow Trip

On Monday we drove 3.5 hours into the Sierra foothills, so our 8 year old and a 3 year old of our friends could have some fun in the snow. The kids were very excited to do all the activities on their wish list – to build a snowman, throw snowballs and sled down the hill. However, after one hour a 3 year old was quite tired, and then ours was also ready to go back to the car after another hour. I think that the next time we will try to go with an overnight stay to extend the snow time and reduce the stress of 7 hours of sitting in the car.

New Year’s Eve

For the second year in a row, we got together with our friends whose son is in the same class as Smarty. All the kids were very excited about another sleepover and rang the New Year at about 9 pm with noise makers and confetti. They were all asleep by 10 pm, and we managed to stay up until midnight, watch San Francisco fireworks on TV and went to bed. Hopefully, we can do it again next year!

What My Child Is Reading

I admit that we didn’t give Smarty many books for Christmas on purpose. We also didn't visit the library during our Christmas break. We were hoping that she will spend this time playing and trying new things. Our strategy worked out. Smarty was still reading her favorite books, especially Harry Potter on her Kindle and books from her room, but she spent more time playing and building with Legos (including reading Lego manuals and Lego Play Ideas book that she received for Christmas).

Favorite Memory of the Week

FriendsDuring Christmas break we met up several times with our best friends who have a son who is now 3.5 years old. It’s fun to see Smarty getting more interested in F as he gets older and trying to take care of him. I guess she enjoys the privileges of being a big kid and being able to guide a younger child in play. We are hoping that this friendship continues over years, and F will be as close to a cousin as Smarty can get, since, sadly, she doesn’t have any first cousins.

I think next year you should plan an overnight snow trip to Montana :)

It was good, but a bit busier than I'd hoped.

We're talking about going into the snow next year.
