Family Events of the Week

  • The weather is warm, and everyone is healthy.
  • I had a really busy week at work and leg a big workshop. It went very well and my future boss is quite pleased.
  • My husband finally got his 3D printer to work, it's actually quite fun to see how it builds a 3D object from a model on the screen.

Lego_BuildingSmarty mostly enjoys special events in school rather than actual classes. She was a lunch helper this week, visited her kindergarten buddies and was a flag holder in school during a school assembly. She said that she and her flag buddy argued so much that they nearly dropped the flag. For some reason this doesn’t surprise me at all. Smarty is rather “forceful” in her desire for things to be her way, but usually only with kids and not with teachers. She is quite excited about missing two weeks of school because she will be traveling to Germany with her Papa.

After School

Patternasaur I mostly saw daughter for dinner and bedtime routine this week. She kept busy reading, playing with her classmate who lives on our street, and trying out 3D modeling software. We had a couple of “fights” this week about her behavior – someone is again forgetting that while we are giving her a lot of freedom, we are not her peers, and that she has to listen and obey. Yes, she can “debate” things, but we only accept respectful debate, not talking back. It’s not easy sometimes to deal with a 8 year old going on 18!

What My Child Is Reading

This week Smarty was “on rebound” and read a lot. She is enjoying Calvin and Hobbs books from our sizeable collection of comics. She also got a new book from her school’s book library – Regarding the Bathrooms: A Privy to the Past (Amazon affiliate link). I looked through the book briefly and was wondering if Smarty was able to follow the story, since it has a very unusual format of collection of various writings – emails, newspaper stories, police transcripts. Apparently she could – she reread this book several times and asked to find another book in these series by Kate Klise.

Places We Are Going

We went hiking last weekend to our traditional January hiking place along San Francisco South Bay. The weather was gorgeous! We saw a lot of waterfowl including white egrets and took our yearly photo next to the flowering mimosa tree. It was strange to talk later in a day to my parents in New Jersey who were preparing for a “snow storm of the century” – luckily, that didn’t quite happen.

Favorite Memory of the Week

In-the-kitchen Last Sunday Smarty had a very definite idea as to what she wanted for dinner. She wanted “juicy chicken breasts with rice”. That’s how we discovered a brilliant new way to make juicy chicken breasts. We made them with this white wine sauce, and they were delicious. Smarty helped making them and already asked for this dinner again next week.

I am so glad to hear that the weather where you are is beautiful. I wish it were here! We had some snow the other day, but not enough to last long. I loved the photo of SF area. That is where my husband is from. Those chicken recipes look really good. I have pinned them to try next week.

We've been quite busy getting ready for a trip ourselves. Sounds like a good week though over all.

Your weather sounds beautiful. A trip to Germany doesn't sound too bad either - can't really blame Smarty for being more excited about that than school :)
