Highlights of the Week

Lego-Present
  • We celebrated my birthday. I got this big Lego set from my husband, and my daughter gave me a lovely poem and a picture.
  • Advent countdown is on! Smarty is really enjoying her book Advent calendar this year.
  • We had rain! In fact, our city probably got more rain in one week than in the whole winter of last year. We are all hoping that California drought is over!
  • I had several days off jury duty, which felt almost like a mini-vacation. Alas, next week is a full court week.

School

Recorder
We are in the short stretch of three school weeks before the Christmas break. Smarty was out for two weeks (one for vacations in Florida and one for Thanksgiving break), and getting up at 6:45 am was awfully hard for her this week, especially with rainy and gloomy weather. Still, she and Papa walked to school every morning despite pouring rain. In science, they continue their study of space, and in music, they got recorders and they are expected to practice every day. Smarty is doing her best, and I can almost recognize pieces of Jingle Bells… from time to time.

After School

There was very little “after school” this week, because Smarty has long rehearsals for her school musical, and she is exhausted when she comes home. Every night we read a book from our Advent book calendar, but she doesn’t do much except reading – reading is her favorite way to relax. Her choir also has a showcase coming up on Dec 17, so there is even more to practice in addition to musical lines, songs, and recorder melodies. The choir had an exhibition for parents, and it was lovely – the kids sounded better than I expected :)

What My Child Is Reading

Some of them are part of Advent calendar, and some are random finds from our bookshelves. Here they are, in my Amazon affiliate widget.

Favorite Memory of the Week

Birthday-Present-8-Years-Old
Smarty “applied herself” to making me a birthday present this year. She drew a picture on one side of this envelope and put sweets inside. On the other side was a “pyramid poem”":
Mama,
My love
For you is
As certain as the
Sun rising and setting every
Day, as the birds chirping, as
The love the sun gives to us
To use to love each other, forevermore… always.
The picture and the poem are already in my “treasured memories” box.

Gifts for Kids Who Have Everything is doing amazingly well… It must be the post name that resonates with other parents stuck with the same problem :)

Terrific poem! We have recorder practice around here, too - I've been catching snippets of what might be "We Three Kings" :)
