Highlights of the Week

Portrait-Mid-Sep

  1. Smarty is finally adjusting to her school schedule. She falls asleep at around 9 pm and she is not as tired in the mornings.
  2. After school classes started – Smarty is very excited about The Wiz musical production in school and enjoyed her first Mad Science class even though she did the same curriculum before 2 years ago.
  3. We had our traditional Harvest Moon celebration with moon cakes and tea outside. Next celebration is not that far away – Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year).
  4. I had a relatively reasonable week at work catching my breath.

School News

Mad Scientist

Smarty is really enjoying school so far. I have signed up to volunteer during math classes again, and I could see firsthand how her third grade teacher works. The classroom seems to have a lot more positive energy than last year, and the kids have a chance to work on their own and in groups based on their ability, not just on curriculum. I am always curious to see how Smarty fits in socially, and she certainly does not lack recess friends and lunch buddies. I am really hoping that she will regain her love of learning that was so stifled last year.

Places We Are Going

September-Swimming

This week started with cooler temperatures, but now we are having another heat wave with temperatures in their 90s during the day. We took advantage of this by making sure we catch the last days of our pool season.

What My Child Is Reading

We managed a visit to the library this week, so there were new books for Smarty to read. I placed them below in my Amazon Affiliate widget. Her school has “Accelerated Reader” program where kids take computerized tests on the books they read and earn points for them. In the course of a year young readers are expected to get through 8 levels earning prizes as they rise to the next level. I personally find “reading for points” questionable, but, luckily, Smarty is well established in her reading for fun habits. Still, she enjoys showing off and already got to level 7 by taking tests on long Harry Potter and Warriors books that she read this summer. Good thing that another student in her class is also a voracious reader, so he and Smarty have a healthy competition going.

Best Memory of the Week

Baking Smarty (admiring herself in the mirror): I have a long neck… Perhaps I will grow up to become the shortest giraffe in the world!

It sounds like the school year is off to a good start! I hope the new teacher ends up being a good fit.

Awesome roundup. We've had a good first few weeks of school too! My kiddo is in TK and loving being on campus with the bigger kids :)

Sounds like you have a great teacher this year.
I'm with you and go back and forth on AR books and quizzes. I don't know how my kids would do with it at all.
