Highlights of the Week

Underwater Mermaid
  • Smarty had her second week of swim classes. She enjoyed them more than last year and got a little closer with a younger girl in her class who lives on our street.
  • She and her Papa tried silk printing. Papa is a little frustrated, because somehow the filler doesn't quite work well on the screen. Anyway, Smarty learned a lot about screens, fillers, drawing liquid and printing inks from this project.
  • I had a crazy week of work, starting every day at 5:30 and having to keep up with my emails until 9 pm at night. I hope that things will settle down soon.
  • Papa made Smarty a PVC whistle, and they discussed how that works. It sounds rather good to me.

Places We Are Going

Shakespeare in the Park
Every year we are going to a local performance of Shakespeare in the Park, but this was the first year we took Smarty with us. The play was Taming of the Shrew, and she really enjoyed it. She has a collection of Shakespeare plays retold for kids, and I asked her to reread Taming of the Shrew before we went. I didn't see Taming of the Shrew for many years and forgot how incredibly sexist that play is, but Smarty absolutely enjoyed the performance and even suggested that we go again next weekend. It also helped that they had a short "pre-show" for kids to explain the play a little bit (this photo is taken during a pre-show).

What My Child Is Reading

As usual, Smarty spent majority of her summer week reading. She is still in “reread” mode, enjoying her favorite pieces of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and Kane Chronicles. She loves the final Hogwarts battle in Harry Potter :) I placed her book picks (mostly from our Kindle collection) in Amazon affiliate widget:

Memory of the Week

Having Fun
Smarty: Do you know Ravenclaw password, Mama? What came first: a phoenix or a fire? And the answer is: A circle has no end.
Me: Hmm, it’s like an egg or a chicken.
Smarty: No, it’s not. Of course, an egg came first. It was simply laid by a different type of bird. That is called “evolution”.

Post of the Week

12 Amazing Engineering Projects took a lead yet again. Perhaps it’s the name :)

I really like Taming of the Shrew - but it is very sexist. It's a nice easy one to start Smarty out on though. We have As You Like It coming up in a couple of weeks here.

We missed Taming of the Shrew. We had a birthday party to go to. But we are hoping to see Romeo and Juliet in September.

I actually saw a rendition of Taming of the Shrew that didn't come across as sexist in the end. It had Petrucchio fighting with Kate and it came across more trying to show her someone else was smart, and then in the ending scene where he calls his wife, it came off very much as the two of them were in on the joke together and pulling a fast one on the other people.
The Ravenclaw passwords amuse me greatly, I'm currently rereading book 7, so I'm going to be getting to some of those soon.
