School is out, and summer has officially begun in our house. We kicked it off with a family art project – making a summer banner for the most visited room in our house, our dine-in kitchen.
Planet Smarty Pants: A family summer art project

Celebrating Seasons

In our family my husband is in charge of decorating the house for major and minor holidays. He is a master for bringing in seasonal touches, especially through his paper designs. For summer, he suggested a fun family project of making a banner to hang over the door leading from our kitchen into the entrance hallway. He printed out big letters, and we hauled all our art supplies out and got to work.
Art Supplies for Summer Banner Project
Our 7 year old was very tentative about this project at first. She is not a child who is inspired by a clean sheet of paper, and the beginning of her first letter looked suspiciously similar to mine. But gradually she got into the flow of creating, and we all worked for more than an hour perfecting our sketches. I thought her letters turned out quite nice!

I wish my husband drew more often, he is a very playful illustrator when he gets into the mood!

I was not very happy with my M, but pleased with how my R turned out even though my family didn’t get “Red-White-Blue” reference. They joked that I drew a French flag, so I had to threw in an American flag just because. It’s also clear from my drawings who is a person with the least amount of artistic talent in our family.

These letters were supposed to be “first sketches”, but we all worked so hard on them that we decided to put the banner up, so we can enjoy them immediately. Hopefully, we will have other family art afternoons throughout summer!

I love this idea! Six letters in the word "summer" and six members of my family - I think we NEED to do this project!
