In Our Lives

IMG_5029
We only have one more week to go in a school year, and I am so glad for it to be over. I don’t recall waiting for my own year end so impatiently when I went to school as I now wait for Smarty’s year end. You might have noticed that I wasn’t posting anything on teacher appreciation topics, because I don’t think that every teacher deserves a gift. No matter how much I am trying to cut Smarty’s teacher some slack in my head, I think she failed my daughter this year – failed to challenge and motivate her, failed to use her desire to help others, and failed to set goals that would stretch my gifted learner in any way. Smarty doesn’t like school at this point and also can’t wait for summer vacation. She will start it by going to her Y program for a week of a summer camp.

After School Adventures

Dive In
We are trying something new with Smarty this week to try to balance her desire for books and computer with creative endeavors and spending time outside. Luckily, the weather cooperated nicely, and we spent a lot of time in the pool last long weekend. We also experimented with erupting paints dropping vinegar onto a painting made with homemade soda-based paints. Smarty is really trying to wrap her mind around computer animation, but so far she has not been able to master loops and if-statements, which frustrates her quite a bit.

Bedlam
Smarty was anxiously waiting for Warriors Dawn book to arrive to our library. Luckily, it came on Thursday, so she is all set for this weekend with books #3 and #4 from Warriors New Prophecy. While she was waiting, she was going again through her favorite Baby Blues and Mutts comics from our home collection.

Favorite Memory of the Week

Funny Dog Drawings
Since Smarty is now required to “unlock” her computer time by doing something creative, she is drawing more. I am terrible at drawing even when following instructions, that’s why I was pleasantly surprised when she whipped up these dogs and other creatures following instructions in How to Draw Cartoon Comic Strips. I love it when she exceeds my expectations!

Most Popular Post and Pin

My most popular post continues to be 12 Book Characters Every Preschooler Should Know (it also happens to have a giveaway). A lot of traffic to this post was driven through this pin on Literacy Activities board by Erin Wing. My second most popular post was June Books for 2 and 3 year olds

You're very good doing one every week! I just managed to put together a monthly roundup! I might have to add in a bit more personal news from the kids next time - that's a good idea.

I do know what you mean about the teacher. As semester one comes to an end, I'm realising the difference in my son's attitude to school (and his behaviour at home and school). This year's teacher seems much more on his wavelength.

You crack me up with your teacher appreciation comments. I was a little surprised to receive flowers in a cute little vase from my school...it was sweet...but I couldn't help thinking, that since I was being paid to do the work - it wasn't really necessary.

Smarty's dogs look great! I was a little overwhelmed at school this year with them asking for donations for school supplies, donations for special programs, donations for teacher birthday presents, and then donations for end of school year gifts. With four children (three in school) that adds up to a lot of money, on top of the very substantial local taxes we already pay!

I wasn't very happy with some of our teachers this year too. We're definitely going to change things up a bit next year!

Her dog is amazing! Great work Smarty!

I should let my kids read some of my Baby Blues and various comics I have, because they'd probably really enjoy them.
