School. We are racing to the end of this term and experiencing yet again this feeling of unease about the state of affairs in school. Smarty struggles with some assignments in a typical way of a gifted student who is asked to do work below his/her level. She doesn’t read assignments fully or rushes through them leading to careless mistakes. We introduced a new “homework recheck” on Thursdays where she is supposed to recheck her homework before I or my husband check it. If we still find mistakes, she is losing her computer time privileges. Sadly, this Thursday she lost her computer time, because the measuring assignment clearly asked to measure different objects in inches while she measured everything in centimeters because it’s more precise.

Afterschool. The week started with great weather and changed to rain in the middle. We are shooting for one hour of staying outside after school when the weather cooperates. I consider it a lot more important for Smarty to stay physically active than to do more “enrichment” activities. She also had a great playdate with her best friend and her usual gymnastics lesson.

What My Child Is Reading

Most of Smarty’s reading this week came from her school and class libraries. Together we finished The Year of the Baby by Andrea Chenga great book about an Asian American family adopting a baby girl from China. We will be reading other books from this series too.

Places We Are Going

We haven’t had a chance to see our best friends for almost 2 months. Their soon-to-be 3 year old son (who, by the way, speaks three languages!) adores Smarty, and she is really enjoying playing with him or reading to him when we get together. I hope these two will be lifelong friends as we are with his parents.

Plans for the Next Week

I feel somewhat sick, so no big plans for this weekend – rest, recovery, some house chores, and preparing for our spring vacation break.

Your Turn:

How was your week and what do you have planned for the week ahead?

I am sorry to hear that Smarty is struggling with assignments due to boredom. I love the photo of her and her little friend. It is such a sweet photo.

Three languages! I'm super impressed.

I agree with you time outside while it's great weather is better than enrichment activities, that time is so fleeting. I struggle with "get school work done or have them play outside" during this time of year.

I couldn't agree more about the importance of playing outside. We aim to get outside everyday depending on the weather. We were on Spring Break this week so next week is back to normal routines for us!

Playing outside is so important!

Yes to the outside! Some of the best learning of childhood takes place during "free play" outside.

I hope you are feeling better now!

I had to laugh at Smarty insisting on measuring in cm instead of inches. I remember being SO annoyed about inches after learning the metric system.
