In our lives: I cannot believe that January is almost over. We really enjoyed having an extra day off this week for Martin Luther King’s Day and spending it outside. School was special this week as well – it was Authors’ Week. This is one of advantages of living in Silicon Valley and attending a public charter school – they can organize and afford events where well known authors and illustrators come to school to talk about their work, read their new books and encourage kids to write.
Smarty is loving Khan Academy and was using her computer time this week to master some skills from 4th grade. It’s interesting to see what comes very easily to her (geometry) and where she gets stuck (equivalent fractions). We also keep up our “journal of amazing people and events” – this week we finished the Alamo and she wrote about three famous people in this journal.
What My Child Is Reading

Smarty was reading and rereading a lot of books from our home library this week. One of our friends gave her this boxed collection of 20 Shakespeare’s Children Stories for Christmas. I was very skeptical, but she is enjoying them. So far her favorites were Julius Caesar and Taming of the Shrew.
Places We Are Going
While the rest of the country is shoveling snow, we are hiking in our T-shirts. It’s not that great, however, because California has the worst drought in recorded history. Still, we took advantage of warm weather by spending time outside and hiking with our friends. Smarty and her friend kept developing a complex play story about them being a bird family with a human child. Too bad they are not in the same class this year.
Fun memory of the week
Smarty and I were out and met a couple with a beautiful greyhound. We started talking and they explained Smarty a little bit about greyhounds and why they are so lean. They said that you could identify a healthy greyhound by being able to easily feel its ribs. Smarty poked me gently and said, Mama is not a healthy greyhound. Everyone in my family except me needs to lose weight!
