School. Smarty is now comfortable in her classroom and enjoys “fun parts” of school – PE, playing wall ball during recess, music, school library visits, Friday art projects. I noticed that she writes more willingly even though her handwriting still leaves a lot to be desired. The only thing that she is complaining about is “reading time” (language arts class), but starting next week they should be divided into ability groups for language arts, and I am keeping my fingers crossed that she enjoys it better.

Afterschool. We have weeks when daughter is not interested in any activities except reading. This was one of those weeks when she was flying through two big books of Norse Myths (affiliate links) – Myths of the Norsemen and D’Aulaire’s Book of Norse Myths. Now I want to read one of them, since she keeps talking about characters and stories I know very little about. It’s fun to see how a student becomes a teacher.

Places we are going. We celebrated the first week of fall with the first fall hike of the season. The weather was gorgeous, and we took a lot of pictures. Smarty enjoys nature photography but still has to work on not moving the camera while taking photos. She is asking to get our old Canon PowerShot as a birthday present, so hopefully she will practice more and take more beautiful nature shots as this one.

Highlights of the Week

  • 1 – Playing a teacher (the post about that this week)
  • 2 – Pumpkin time! Getting the seeds out to roast them.
  • 3 – A pumpkin hat
  • 4 – We found a lot of those giant grey pine cones during our first fall hike…
  • 5 – Smarty made her own worksheet when we were playing school

Your turn: What were the highlights of your week?

Her reading is so far ahead of C's - who is also in 2nd grade - I could see where a mixed level reading group could be tedious for her. Love the pinecones!

The photos of Smarty playing teacher made me think of all the times I played teacher growing up. I think that's how I ended up as a teacher!

I don't know about you but I've given up trying to read all the books K reads. It's just not possible anymore.

I need to dig up a copy of my Greek D=Aulaire. It's hiding somewhere. I wonder if there's a version about Egypt mythology...........

Fingers crossed on reading

Your hike sounds wonderful! What a great way to begin Fall. Jane is getting a more adult camera for her birthday, also. I think she will love it!
