In our lives… It was the second week of a summer camp for Anna with the theme of Where the Wild Things Are. The camp went on a field trip to the Oakland Zoo and had a Friday visit from a traveling petting zoo. In addition, the kids working in groups made fun habitat shoebox dioramas with plastic animals and various art materials. We are very happy with the camp, and Anna is looking forward to it every day. I was able to spend more time with Anna every day as I am right now on sort of “forced vacation” because of a conflict with my new manager. I have faith that everything will work out fine, but in the meantime I am telling myself to enjoy my “lemonade” and an unexpected time off.
Summer Learning. This week Anna’s focus on reading weakened a little, and we had time for other things. She wanted to learn to play Yatzee. We tried when she was 5, and she was not ready for it. This time she was able to understand the rules and maintain her own scorecard. I think Yatzee is great in helping to grasp probability not through a book but through a game.
Places we are going. This week started with a freak rainfall and ended with a huge heat wave. We managed to get out of the Valley on Saturday morning and drive down to the ocean. Anna was very excited – she only went to the beach once last summer. Of course, the water was freezing cold, but that didn’t stop Anna and other kids at the beach at all. Hopefully we can do it again before this summer is over.
Happiness Picture of the Week – the birds are not chasing her, there were just so many of them over the water…
