One of the things that makes me happiest is spending time in nature, and this year I really want to spend as much time enjoying the beauty of our natural world as possible. And our winter weather finally turned from frigid to normal. Normal here means we have rain and then we have beautiful sunshine and about 60 degrees out. Perfect weather for winter hiking in the place we visit yearly at about this time – Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge. What’s so wonderful about these hikes?

Jan27_DB2Getting to climb a beautiful flowering mimosa tree – touch, smell, watch the birds and listen to their sounds.

Jan27_DB3Picking up a new hobby – Anna loves taking pictures when we are out. Slowly we are teaching her basics of photography, and I love to look at the pictures later to see the world from her point of view.

Jan27_DB5Reinforcing something we read about – this sedimentary salt rock was way too cool. We picked some fragments home to study under the magnifying glass.

Not planning, not thinking about the next item on “to do list”. Just enjoying the perfect moment and being grateful for it.

There is only one time that is important—NOW!! It is the most important time because it is the only time that we have any power. Leo Tolstoy.

Oh I agree, and I struggle so much with that at times.

Now that is a Winter nature hike that all of us could handle. Trade you one year, then Anna might just get to see her fair share of cold rain or even snow.

This is such a beautiful place! We are still waiting for the weather to get a bit warmer so we can go on short hikes.
