Jan5_BirdWalk

One of my New Year resolutions is to have a little bit more structure and planning in our lives, so we don’t waste too much time trying to choose from too many options. I consulted an online calendar for the list of special days in January and picked a few to celebrate. One of them was a National Bird Day on January 5. As I was still recovering from my cold and Anna was coming down with it, we didn’t go far. We Jan5_Birds1simply went for a walk around our neighborhood trying to see, hear and photograph as many birds as we can. It’s funny how many bird sounds we could see when we were focusing on them. We also saw quite a few flocks in the skies – after all, many birds, especially water birds, come wintering to our lands. Anna wanted to see birds up close, and we had a conversation about bird watchers’ habits of stillness and quietness – Jan5_Birds3something that doesn’t come naturally to her. Still, we had luck at the house with a small bird bath, which had a sizeable flock of tiny birds visiting it just as we passed by. I estimate that we’ve seen a good hundred birds in one hour we’ve been out. There are a lot of additional extension activities that we could have done (and might still do later in the month):

I didn't know there was a National Bird Day! Kiddo would love that. I'm glad to hear Anna's getting some birdwatching, time in! I need to do a new bird book list, soon!

We start our day with a walk now and we will include this in our activity checklist! The first day on our walk, K found a Christmas tree left outside and counted 10 rings.

Bird watching is one of our favorite pass times. It is amazing this year how many different species we still have around our yard, even Robins.

My mil loves birds and has so many of them in her yard.

JDaniel has a cold too. I love the idea of looking for fun holiday and putting them on the calendar ahead of time.

We need to refill our bird feeder so we can attract birds to our yard again - now, to make sure they have found it by the Great Backyard Bird Count weekend!

I remember being amazed when I moved to Northern California at how many birds there were there. Mike makes fun of me because I asked him once if it was a bird recording playing at the student center. I had never heard so many birds singing close to people!

What a great activity to focus on after school and get outdoors! Amanda just won 2nd place with her photos on the Great BackYard Count. Can't wait to do it again this year in February. So glad you're back hosting After School Link Up! Happy new year!
