monthly goals at mama smiles

July24_MamaAnna

July has flown by with an amazing speed. I was pretty busy at work for most of the month, the last week was the first time when I was able to catch my breath a little. We enjoyed visiting our community pool as often as we could. Anna has come a very long way from not wanting to put her head in the water even for a moment. She is now diving, swimming under water and on the verge of swimming on her own. We also went on weekend trips and visited some of the most beautiful places around us – Monterey Bay, Santa Cruz beaches and redwood forests of the Big Basin. Anna stayed healthy and happy, and she was enjoying her summer camp.

August will be a month of big transitions for us. Today is the very last time my daughter goes to her preschool, and it’s very bittersweet. On Wednesday the two of us are flying to New Jersey – Anna cannot wait to see her grandparents. When we are back home, there will be a few days of “staycation” and then… off to Kindergarten she goes. Our new school year starts on August 22.

I am a little nervous about all the travel, the changes, the big plans for August. I hope we will all have fun, and that daughter will enter her kindergarten class with less anxiety that she is displaying now. She is worried that “the teachers will make me work a lot and I will miss my preschool friends”. I hope that we will get to meet both the teachers and her new friends in the last week before K, so she can get to know them better.

I'm sure you'll be able to find quite a few books to help Anna work through her anxiety about the changes at school - Franklin Goes to School, comes to mind, right off the bat, but I know there have to be hundreds of picture books dedicated to the first day of Kindergarten.

Have a fun and safe trip. I am with Leah, I am sure you can find books to help Anna with her first days of school jitters. It is hard on children to face such huge changes, but they all seem to get through them and adjust just fine.

I wish we had a community pool!

Have a wonderful trip!

School doesn't start here until after Labor Day.

This is a post I wrote when C was preparing for K - some of the books we read are in the post, if you are interested. http://superheroesandprincesses.blogspot.com/2009/08/preparing-for-big-day.html

I remember being scared to death of kindergarten, but after a few days I loved it. I'm sure Anna will love K! Hope you have fun on your east coast trip. :)

Have a wonderful vacation. I'm not ready for school to start yet! Something tells me that Anna will do fabulously in kindergarten.

The books that come to mind for me: Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten, and The Kissing Hand.

In Texas they have a meet the teacher day at the school. I'm sure your schools have something like that.
