image India We spent some time learning around India. Again, I made a “cheat sheet” for Anna with 9 “famous things about India”. The obvious movie choice was The Jungle Book, but Anna was not in the least interested in watching it. She finds all Disney movies too intense. Instead she opted to read an original unabridged Jungle Book by herself. Her favorite books out of the ones below were Mama’s Saris and Finders Keepers. We made Chicken Curry and tried coconut juice. We also watched some YouTube clips of Indian dancing from Bollywood movies. I had more ideas in mind, but Anna was clearly losing interest, so I will keep them for our repeat visit to India next year. One fact that Anna unexpectedly found interesting is that India, just like America, was a British colony and fought to gain its independence. It was a good coincidence to study India directly after our virtual visit to UK.

Anna was not interested in any Indian crafts or coloring pages, but strangely she quite likes “follow instructions” maps from Enchanted Learning (we have membership for that site) and is able to do them independently. I also used a great idea of Christy from Superheroes and Princesses. I printed a map of India and asked Anna to draw things that came from India on this map. At first she was reluctant, but eventually she really got into it into it. I don’t have the end result shot at the point of writing this post, but it’s now in our geography album, so perhaps I will photograph it and update the post later.

Very nice collection of things from India!

The only Disney movie my kids enjoy is Cinderella. The rest are incredibly intense. Emma might like them, but Johnny definitely wouldn't!

It is so wonderful that she can read well enough to read Jungle Book and the map's instructions by herself. It must make for a more enriching school time for her. Wonderful ideas for learning about Inda.

How do you like the membership? I've thought about getting it, but have never quite done it.

we actually had to ban The Jungle Book for a time, after my son started telling us to "go away, leave me along" and swing his arms to fight like Mogali does...haha. You should check out the Kane Miller titles on my Usborne Site, they have books from different countries around the world, They are great!

We haven't read the Jungle Book, that's a good one to put on the list.

I'm always so impressed with your geography lessons. My kids have gotten into watching The Planet Earth series. I wonder if Anna would enjoy them.

Anna was exposed to so many fascinating aspects of Indian culture. Did Anna enjoy seeing Bollywood dancers?

When I read your country studies, I always want to do more in this area. I just don't know how to do state studies and country studies at the same time without it being too confusing, although we did just do a bit of learning about China. I have to figure this out!

Anyway, I am glad the map worked out for you. C and R both had fun with that.

I enjoy watching Bollywood dancing; what did Anna think of it?

So what was the best India book that you read? I am looking for some books on India for my daughter because we are doing a cultural exchange with someone from India
