I am trying to get Anna to draw a bit more. Unfortunately, it’s not a strong area of hers (or mine), but I am encouraged by some books I read that say that anyone can learn to draw if they know how to break a drawing into elements of shape. Deep Space Sparkle has some interesting lessons for K level on elements of shape, and both Anna and I learned how to draw a turtle. The one underneath is obviously mine, and I helped her draw the first “upside down U”, because she is struggling with drawing curved shapes that are large enough. Overall she enjoyed the drawing enough to complete it and to make a story later:
Once upon a time there was a magical turtle that really wanted to see a beach. It started walking but got lost. So it went to look for a map shop to buy a map. Then she stopped a car and asked the driver to take her to the beach. The children in the car wanted to keep a turtle as a pet. But their parents said, “Not so fast! What if it’s a dangerous snapping turtle?” And the turtle said, “I munch on everything even on humans”. So parents told children that they cannot keep a turtle, but they can stay with her on the beach for 10 years and watch her dig a hole and lay eggs and then babysit her babies. And maybe they can keep one baby as a pet.
