I have made Anna a homemade geoboard in the past, but it was 5x5 and rather small. After some initial interest, it was sitting abandoned on our art board. Eventually I was tempted by this inexpensive 11x11 geoboard that was conveniently available with my Amazon Prime membership. I was somewhat disappointed with the boring rubber bands that came with it, but our huge set of colorful rubber bands from Dollar store worked just fine. Anna played with her new geoboard on and off – it’s also a really good exercise for those chubby fingers to stretch and position rubber bands on the knobs. She worked hard to measure and make a square, and then I showed her how to make “pictures” on her geoboard. First she was adding to my creations, but then got adventurous enough to try her own. She made various letters and then created this house independently. Eventually I might break down and get Geoboard Pictures for Little Kids, but so far we are enjoying free exploration of our big geoboard. Of course, it’s one of those props that will grow with Anna as she learns more about geometry. Some interesting ideas on using geoboard can be found here and here.
