The School Corner – January 15, 2010

Anna is 3 years 2 months old

I was pretty sick this week with a nasty cold and just now starting to feel better. Anna was affected as well, but fortunately not as much, and she didn’t skip any school. They learned about construction and did some fun crafts (for example, Bob the Builder hats from paper plates). The weather changed for the worse again – it was foggy and rainy, so we were cooped up indoors and watched a bit more TV than we usually do. In our “new to us” efforts we finally signed up for fresh produce delivery from the local farm coop. Our first box contained oranges, apples, salad, garlic, cabbage and leeks. This made us try a new beef stew with leeks recipe, and Anna was very happy to help me cook. As always, her favorite part is adding spices and mixing. We still continued with our geography, math and reading tracks:

Fall Leaves Reading Track hums along. We finished Silent E book of Progressive Phonics, and moved on to “Two Vowels Walking” which proved to be an easier topic for Anna. It’s interesting to see how she combines sight recognition with sounding words out and with trying to guess the word out based on context and picture clues. It’s especially noticeable when she tries to read random books or reads early readers with new vocabulary like this one. Not seasonal, but I just happened to have it on hand.

Math was again about games and practical life. Even though we have tons of worksheet-based books, my daughter is completely not interested in them unless they are mazes or connect-the-dots. We had measurement tools in our math box, sorted beads, measured spices for cooking, counted while playing with balls and built with Legos. Anna loves her Legos and spends some time every day building endless towers and chimneys.

On Earth

Social Studies. It was our second week of “Earth overview”. Last week Anna didn’t seem very interested but once she realized that some of our track activities include new movies to watch, she really warmed up to it. She actually insists that we need to buy Me on a Map book, because she likes it so much she wants to read it forever and ever. We learned the names of seven continents and we admired the wonders of our planet by watching Earth. And we didn’t forget our human body interest – read about it here.

Jan10_GelPens

Fine Motor Skills/Prewriting. Anna got a set of gel pens as a birthday party favor, and she liked drawing with them… for a little bit :) This picture is supposed to be a river with a bridge across it – looking at maps clearly left some sort of an impression. She also did more quick art projects than I expected – a bit of coloring here, a bit of cutting there, and a lot of clean up for one sick and tired mommy.

Gross Motor Skills/Nature. As I mentioned, the weather was not very cooperative this week. You might have noticed a lot of pajama pictures in recent posts – we get Anna into her pajamas for her rest time in the afternoon (in the hopes that it will convince her to sleep), and usually she stays in them in the afternoon if we don’t plan to go out. When we are home Anna loves just to jump around when she is in a good mood or play hide-and-seek. She is always excited when her father blows a balloon for her. At least she got a lot of energy out at her friend’s birthday party. It was in Pump-It-Up, where the kids spent more than an hour bouncing, climbing and sliding.

Which maze workbooks do you really like? I'm looking to get one to start my son out with.

Being sick is no fun. But, I'm glad you're feeling better.
Now I have the "Two Vowels Walking" song stuck in my head.......
I need to find a good set of Geography songs.

I'm sorry to hear that you were feeling sick this week. It really sucks to be sick when you have a child waiting for you to play(or teach them something new).

I want to encourage Deen to color more but he doesnt seem to care for it much.. maybe using different materials like using gel pens(as Anna did) might make him want to color. I will try that soon! :)

I love the Progressive Phonics book idea! Thank you so much for posting the link! We've hit a wall with our reading (stuck between books on the Bob series) and this may be just the ticket to help us progress from one level to the next!

Hope you are feeling better. We've had sickness around here for almost two weeks now and it's still going strong. Slowly moving through everyone!

We have LOTS of pj time here, me included!

I would love to do a fresh produce delivery!!

I am sorry that you are sick!
Diego is very interested in mazes and dot-to-dots but he has also enjoyed learning addition this week with his Papi. I think that it might have more to do with one on one time with his father then the actual math work.
We have spent a lot of time in PJ's lately too just because it has been so cold and they are SO comfy.

I'm so sorry you weren't feeling well - Mommyhood is tough when Mom is sick but the kid isn't! I hope you are feeling back to normal soon! I KNOW M would love the measuring math box... have to put something together for him like this soon. We love pajama days and playing with balloons too! The last picture is really cute (OK, every picture of Anna is cute)! :)
