Anna almost never asks to do arts, but yesterday she was sitting on my lap listening to Christmas Carols on YouTube and staring at the page on my desk featuring “suggestions” for December crafts. She promptly informed me that reindeer is made out of handprints and wanted to make a handprint with the finger paints that were lying unopened in our arts closet forever and ever. It never seemed the right moment for them, but yesterday she talked me into opening them. As we quickly discovered, they are not that great for handprints, but perfect for beautiful open-ended designs. Anna enjoyed wetting the paper, mixing colors and watching the results. It was not an independent activity due to its messiness, but she really enjoyed making something different for a change and didn’t want to stop. I might cut them for homemade Christmas cards today, because I really like how they turned out.
