Raising Itty-Bitty Bookworms

Sep25_Charlotte1_SM

I have to state one thing in the beginning of this post. I don’t like baking. It’s convoluted, prone to error (at least in my case) and bad for one’s figure. However, the other day I caught myself standing in Michael’s, admiring Halloween cupcake cups and contemplating cupcakes. Whoa, that’s what having children does to you! Still, it took me about two weeks to finally get around to baking this cake. I think I baked it last about 20 years ago, when I was still a student back home in the former Soviet Union. In Russian it’s called Sharlotka – Charlotte, and it’s the fastest cake ever:

Sep25_Charlotte_SM

1. Blend 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of flour and 3 eggs

2. Cut two Granny Smith apples.

3. Pour batter over apples and bake for 15 minutes.

As you can see, Anna was helping very enthusiastically and couldn’t wait for it to get ready and cool down. Then she didn’t want any apples in the cake. Oh well, at least the rest of us enjoyed it (and I won’t mention that that nice crust cracked as soon as the cake cooled down). Now I am thinking that maybe I can manage baking something once a month, and next month it will be something Halloweenish.

Good for you! In all honesty, I've never been a baker AT ALL. In fact, over here "baking" is when you thaw some cookie dough and plop it in the oven. I've only been doing it more since having Maddie help because she enjoys it so much.

Anyway, glad you two had fun. The results look delicious!

I've been missing your blog. I'm not sure what it is, but I haven't been online much. I'm off to catch up on your posts!

All of these yummy apple recipes. I wish I was not allergic to apples. But I can still try them for the kiddos. As for the baking urge, it's this time of year. Makes everyone want to try and bake something.

Well, I wish I did not like to bake so much. Not only for health reasons, but also because I use it to put off doing other things ~ like laundry.

Baking is like therapy for me. I know ~ sounds kind of weird, but true.

Can't wait to try this interesting recipe. I have never seen anything like it.

Thanks for posting and linking up!

Forgot to ask ~ at what temperature did you bake it?

you're so funny. I hear on baking though. I have to try recipes usually 3-4 times before I get it right and often when I attempt them later I mess them us again. bummer!

But she looks glad A enjoyed it!
I look forward to seeing what you do post!

How interesting, my mother-in-law just sent me a recipe that is very similar to this. A few ingredients are different and there's a different baking time, but other than that, it's the same cake. Yours sounds really easy, I'll have to try it!

I love baking, but agree about it not being good for one's figure. That's why I give my treats away, muahaha!

PS: here's a simple recipe I've been wanting to make, but I'm waiting until closer to Halloween. Might be good for your next venture into baking. :)

That sounds good! What temp did you bake it at, I might have to try it.

I love to bake, always have! I haven't joined in on the Simply made Sunday as believe me our Sundays are too simple where food comes from. Not much time at home on this day of the week.

This sounds simple and delicious - good combination since I'm not much of a baker either.
